Must-Buy Jeju Souvenir! The New World of Spicy Meat & Garlic, Ottogi “Ttot-ttot Ramen” Honest Review

Hello everyone! I’m your blogger, bringing you the rustic, warm, and authentic daily life of Korea. Isn’t one of the greatest joys of traveling discovering special local foods that you can only taste in that specific region? If you are planning a trip to Korea’s beautiful Jeju Island, or have already been there, you are going to fall in love with the special ramen story I have for you today. Today, I’ve prepared an honest and delicious review of ‘Ottogi Jeju Ttot-ttot Ramen,’ a special limited-edition ramen that perfectly captures the warm vibe and deep flavors of Jeju Island.

When and How Was Ottogi Ttot-ttot Ramen Created?

Have you ever heard the word ‘Ttot-ttot’? It means ‘warm’ in the traditional Jeju dialect. Doesn’t the name alone warm your heart? There is a very touching and rustic story behind the creation of this ramen. A young entrepreneur running a small restaurant in Jeju Island was selling his own special meat ramen using Ottogi’s popular ‘Jin Ramen’ as a base. Ottogi happened to see this and, aiming to promote local co-prosperity, commercialized this special recipe into an official packet ramen. That’s how ‘Ttot-ttot Ramen’ was released to the world in late 2022. By generously using fresh garlic and green onions grown in the Jeju breeze, along with rich broth made from Jeju pork, this product is the result of a very kind and warm project that helps local farmers while gifting consumers the deep, authentic taste of Jeju.

A Treasure Found in a Jeju Souvenir Shop: Price and Where to Buy

Actually, it’s quite hard to find this ramen in regular large supermarkets or convenience stores in the city. That’s because it was exclusively planned as a Jeju regional specialty! So, imagine my delight when I stumbled upon this treasure-like ramen in a cute little ‘Jeju souvenir shop’ during my recent trip. The price was 8,000 KRW for a bundle containing 4 packs. While it is a bit pricier than typical Korean packet ramen, considering it’s a special limited-edition souvenir you can only buy in Jeju and is packed with premium local Jeju ingredients, I think it’s a very reasonable and attractive price for a travel gift. When you head back home, instead of heavy chocolates or common snacks, gifting ramen—the true soul food of Koreans—especially a Jeju limited edition, will surely make you look like a person with great taste!

The New World of Rich, Spicy Meat & Garlic Ramen! An Honest Taste Test

So, what about the most important part—the taste? To sum up my experience of cooking and eating it myself, it is the absolute standard of ‘spicy and deep meat & garlic ramen’!

When you open a pack of Ttot-ttot Ramen, you’ll notice the components are quite special. It contains chewy noodles, vegetable flakes, a rich liquid soup base, and the absolute core of this ramen: the ‘Manong Block’ (freeze-dried minced garlic). By the way, ‘Manong’ is a friendly Jeju dialect word for garlic! The cooking method is also a bit different from regular ramen. You boil the noodles, vegetable flakes, and liquid soup first. Then, you turn off the heat and add the Manong Block right at the very end, mixing it in.

Because the Manong Block is added last after turning off the heat, the signature fragrant aroma and pleasant pungent kick of fresh minced garlic are incredibly alive in the broth. When you carefully take a spoonful of the soup, the rich, thick, and savory umami of the heavy meat broth spreads fully in your mouth. Added to this is the spicy heat of the generous amount of garlic and green onions, which perfectly and cleanly cuts through any greasiness from the rich meat broth, creating an impeccable balance.

If you normally enjoy spicy and rich soup dishes, you might burst into an exclamation of “Wow, this is really delicious!” right from the first bite. The noodles also perfectly retain the signature chewiness of Korean Ottogi ramen, allowing you to enjoy it deliciously without getting soggy until the very last strand. I really hope you all get to experience this special bowl, where the garlic block smoothly dissolves in the hot water to add such a deep, incredible flavor to the broth.

🌶️ K-Spice Level: How Hot is the “Ttot-ttot” Kick?

Since this noodle features a robust garlic kick, you might wonder about its exact spice level. Let me clear it up for you! In terms of pure chili heat, it is roughly on par with or slightly milder than Korea’s legendary Shin Ramyun (or Ottogi’s own Jin Ramyun Spicy). However, the “spiciness” here is quite unique. Instead of a burning, artificial chili extract heat, it delivers a deeply comforting, fragrant, and sharp warmth from the rich minced garlic. The sweet aroma of steamed green onions balances the broth beautifully, so if you can handle a basic everyday bowl of Korean ramen, you can comfortably enjoy this savory masterpiece without any trouble!

Highly Recommended for Ramen Maniacs! The Charm of Diverse Korean Ramen

There are countless types of delicious ramen in Korea, but Ottogi Jeju Ttot-ttot Ramen boasts a very distinct personality among them. It goes beyond just being a simple, quick instant meal; it feels like you are being served a beautifully crafted dish carefully cooked in a small, local mom-and-pop restaurant in Jeju. I highly recommend this Ttot-ttot Ramen to passionate ‘ramen maniacs’ exploring ramen from all over the world, and to anyone who wants to experience a newer, special local food culture rather than the common ramen you eat every day. If you travel to Jeju Island in the future, make sure to add it to your shopping or souvenir list! The moment you return home and cook a pot of Ttot-ttot Ramen, you will happily immerse yourself in warm memories, feeling as if you are traveling in Jeju all over again.

Bibi’s Final Verdict: A Warm Hug from Jeju Island

To round it all up, Ottogi Jeju Ttot-ttot Ramen easily scores a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars from me! It perfectly elevates the humble instant noodle into a premium, restaurant-quality dish thanks to the genius addition of the freeze-dried Jeju garlic block. For 2,000 KRW per packet, it is an absolute steal and a brilliant, authentic travel souvenir to share with your loved ones back home.
