Mokpo Accommodation Recommendation: ‘Baeknyeon Hanok’ Stay for a Romantic Walking Trip

Hello! I’m a blogger who loves the rustic and warm corners of Korea. Today, I’d like to introduce a travel destination that has kept my heart warm ever since I visited: Mokpo. I’ll also share my “top pick” for accommodation, which always appears in any Mokpo accommodation recommendation list—‘Baeknyeon Hanok’.

What kind of city is Mokpo?

In short, Mokpo is a “Romantic port city where Korean history and incredible flavors come alive.”

📍 Where is it?

Mokpo is a port city located at the southwestern tip of the Korean peninsula. It takes about 2.5 hours from Seoul by KTX (high-speed train) and serves as the main gateway to the South Jeolla province.

🏙️ What kind of city is it?

  • A Historic Port: Opened in 1897, it is a historic city where Korea’s modern history is well-preserved in its architecture and streets.
  • A Transportation Hub: Where the land meets the sea, it is a major terminal for ferries heading to Jeju Island and many other beautiful islands.

✨ Why is it great?

  • Stunning Views: The sunset viewed from Yudalsan Mountain or the Marine Cable Car crossing over the ocean is absolutely breathtaking.
  • A Foodie’s Paradise: Even among Koreans, Mokpo is famous for having the best food. Its fresh seafood and traditional “Namdo” cuisine are must-tries.

🏡 A Neat and Cozy Sanctuary, ‘Baeknyeon Hanok’

My sanctuary during this trip was Baeknyeon Hanok. It’s a Hanok-style stay located right in the city center, yet it feels surprisingly quiet and cozy. Walking through the gate, you’re greeted by a small courtyard and a beautifully maintained traditional house. The first impression was so cute and tidy that I fell in love with it instantly.

The interior beautifully combines traditional Hanok aesthetics with modern cleanliness. Lying on soft bedding in a room filled with a faint scent of wood allowed me to let go of complex thoughts and focus entirely on resting. It offers a cozy, friendly atmosphere you won’t find in fancy hotels—it feels like staying at your grandmother’s house that you’ve known for years.

Retro Vibes Where Time Stands Still

Mokpo has preserved much of its look from the 1980s and 90s, which is quite rare in fast-developing Korea. The villages with low-profile roofs and the view of the sea from the hills will offer you a sense of peace you won’t forget.

Mokpo is a place that preserves the preciousness of the past amidst modern convenience, and Baeknyeon Hanok is the warm embrace waiting for you at its center. How about leaving the flashy city behind this weekend to walk the friendly alleys of Mokpo? I promise your heart will feel a lot lighter.
